The Grimm Report CD reviews: Nite Owl - Leftover's Vol. 06 "The Last Supper"

Nite Owl

Leftover's Vol. 06 "The Last Supper"

Grimm Score: 3.5 out of 5

There are very few backpack rappers and public figures in this economic doughnut hole we call St. Louis that can really fit the bill when it comes to “golden age” hip hop; The FuFops, DJ Needles, B gyrL, DJ Kaos aka Kriss Kringle, Screwz & Scripts, 8thLetter, Rockwell Knuckles and Black Spade just to name a few. This list is a little lengthy but out of all of the rappers in this city the percentage is still small. That’s just stating actual fact. Within that list we have an emcee that’s been in the game for 15+ years. He goes by the name Nite Owl, or Nitroowlious, or just NiTRO for short. He just released his 6th volume of the Leftovers chronicles during the holiday season greatly titled “The Last Supper”. This album features production from Kenautis Smith Sr., Instrumental, Stoney Rock, J-Soul, Wyshmaster and more... Read More

Pumpkin Pie, Men and Sexual Arousal

Yesterday, a friend sent me a link to an article published on AOL.com about a study involving men and scents.

Men and scents. Hmmm. We buy perfumes, body lotions and butters to not only smell good, but to keep our boyfriend or hubby in the nook of our necks, his hands in our hair and his kisses on our hands and arms, and every place else, hehe. I've recently started using heavier fragrances in my butters for more of a lasting smell. Early on, I used light scents that would fade after application. I loved the way the pumpkin pie fragrance smelled. It wasn't overpowering and it lasts. So, a customer of mine recently said to me that men have been clamoring over her since she's been using my Pumpkin Pie Butter. Men love the smell. They want to know what it is, and then they ask her for her number! After this, I figured, hey, I have a new marketing angle! It wasn't until I received this link to the article yesterday that I really believe that Pumpkin Pie Butter should be a must-have in every woman's "arsenal."

In the article, "What Turns Men On? The Smell of Pumpkin Pie, Researchers Say" a study was being conducted initially on patients who have lost their sense of smell due to head trauma. This study from the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation out of Chicago has found that the scent of Pumpkin Pie with a bit of lavender mixed in, increased sexual arousal faster in men than any other perfume on the market.

In the study, Dr. Alan Hirsch, measured penile blood flow and food scents topped the list over the more floral scents from perfume in regards to sexual arousal. He states that men who lose their sense of scent due to head trauma also lose their sexual arousal. I'm thinking that the high notes of cinnamon may have something to do with them gaining a bit of their sexual arousal back, but I may be wrong, just my theory.  The Dr. and his colleagues are trying to figure out, "Why pumpkin pie?" They are suggesting because it reminds men of their childhood or old girlfriends maybe. My guess is that it reminds them of a good and happy place. Pumpkin pie is made during holidays and holidays are mostly fun for us all. So, just how your favorite toy from childhood brings you a feeling of happiness, I would guess that the smell of pumpkin pie would do the same. So, Dr. Hirsch states that, "Maybe the scent induces men to be more relaxed." Oh, and if older men are your type, try vanilla scented perfumes and body lotions, the demographic for this is 60+ so if you're looking for a hefty life insurance policy... that may be the scent for you. Rarrr!

The Grimm Report CD reviews: Murphy Lee - Lost Tapes

Murphy Lee
Lost Tapes
Grimm Score 4 out of 5

St. Lunatics member and UCME Entertainment CEO Murphy Lee is the most accomplished artist from his camp next to fellow rapper Nelly Mo. Providing the St. Louis music scene with hit after hit throughout the years, Murph dropped two studio albums, while making guest appearances on an ample amount of songs with other supreme recording artists such as Young Dro, Kanye West, Sleepy Brown, Jermaine Dupri, Beanie Sigel and many more. Murphy Lee also hosts a vegetarian cooking show online with Kyjuan called “Good 4 U”. Now that the Derrty Ent/UCME M.C. is independent, he has a new mixtape called “Lost Tapes” that was put out around the release of Nelly’s “5.0” album. “Lost Tapes” features past and present songs that were made and never released during Murphy Lee’s time with Universal Records... The Grimm Report CD reviews: Potzee - STL Patriot

Potzee
STL Patriot
Grimm Score 4.5 out of 5

“Born and raised in U. City but got grown in J-Town…” a memorable quote from Quor 03 member and UCME Entertainment recording artist Potzee. This hongree rapper has a catalog of music longer than the only checkout line open at Aldi on a Saturday morning. Potzee aka Potz Spifwell has been making tasteful songs like “Good Evening” and “Dat Girl” for years and they are classic favorites. He even filmed an excellent music video co-starring the entire city of St. Louis damn near for “Dat Girl”. #NowReadNewBlog: The Marcus Graham Chronicles: An Open Letter to My Exs

The Marcus Graham Chronicles is my personal journey of dealing with love and relationships. It is called the Marcus Graham Chronicles because of my affinity for the movie Boomerang and how the main character of Marcus Graham relates to me as the "black professional" man. You can check out previous posts in this series here.

In this evolution and journey to cure this condition that I have coined the Marcus Graham Condition. There is a moment in Boomerang where Marcus Graham has to sit with himself and face all the of the ills of the world he has put on women in his past. Though this will be no where as deep of a process as Marcus had. This below I have decided is one of the best ways to move forward and become a better man you have to acknowledge some of the ill will you have done in the past. This is my attempt at purging my soul to the women of my past...

Dear __________,

I finally answered the questions to get my Relationship Credit Score, as reluctant as I was to do it (and yeah, yeah, I wrote it). My score wasn't too surprising - not low, but not the best it could have been. It indicated areas in my life I needed to work on. I'm not stupid, I know you probably could give two shits about this letter. But hell, I've been doing a lot of soul searching and its time to let sleeping dogs lie (or put them totally to sleep) if I'm going to continue my quest to be come a better man.

I have a lot I need to work on and things I have to take ownership of. Things I did wrong. It’s real easy to justify the fucked up shit you do in life, especially when you come up with lame and unsubstantial reasons for doing the dirt. I know I could have done things better in the relationship. I'd make bad decisions and claim "The Onus Was Not on Me" . It's funny how we can go through our whole lives and blame others for our woes in life without taking any ownership for what we do. I blamed you for my relationship woes, shrugged my shoulders and chalked it up as part of "the game".

I had to sit back and really dissect my part in our break-up... I may have given up to soon on our relationship... or maybe I didn't give up soon enough. Maybe I strung it out just because of an "internal fear of loss". Maybe I needed to have heeded the words Bishop Don Juan gave to me when it comes to love. Maybe I should have held on too you longer and put more of myself into our relationship. Perhaps I should have let you go, knowing I wasn't totally into the relationship. I could have been a little more caring. I could have been a bit more forthright. I could have been a bit more patient and more understanding. I could have been a a lot less Marcus Graham. But, we both know playing the "What IF Game" will get me you nowhere ( Shit, if IF was a spliff we all would be high). The past is the past. Hindsight is always easier to see NOW, especially when we needed it THEN.

I'd advise you not to take much offense, but I have to say...you're crazy as cat shit. Yeah, I said it. You.are. crazy.as.cat.shit. But, I know I played my part in your developed insanity. On the flip-side, that would mean I was somewhat crazy for being with you. They say like-minded people are attracted to each other, right? Considering all the crazy things you said and did) I'll be honest and admit... I may have induced some of that craziness. Hell, when you're in love you do stupid crazy things. We both surely did our share. Maybe you more than me but hey, perception is everything. You probably thought I was the crazy one. There were a lot of things you did to me that never sat well with me then (and still don't now) but this letter will address my choices, not yours.

You've probably read many of my editions of The Marcus Graham Chronicles . I figure you either laugh or grimace at them because you already know that I'm a jackass. The thing is, while you may have ill-will towards me, talk shit about me, or maybe even hate me... I don't feel that way about you! It’s cool, and I understand you need to do what takes for you to move forward in life. Maybe you're not cool with me and give me a "side-eye" every now and again - that's okay, too. I can accept how you feel about me as long as you're happy. When we're with someone (or breaking up with them) people like to say..."You'll never find someone who will treat you like I did". That may be true, but maybe there's someone who can treat you better than I did... and I accept that.

You were there for me in ways words can't even begin to describe. This, I cannot deny. I will always be in debt to you. Despite (and maybe because of) all the ups and downs we put each other through, I truly am happy and grateful you came into my life.... even though we're may not meant to be. I appreciate you for everything you taught me about myself, the world, and for making me better for future relationships. Because really, "I want you happy even if it's not with me." -Mason Betha (aka Mase)

All My Best,

D. Frierson

NEW BLOG... THIS FOOL TOLD ME TO LOWER MY EXPECTATIONS AND IT WORKED!!

What would you say if i told you to, "lower your expectations"? You'd probably look at me as if I passed gas in a crowded elevator! To be honest, that's the look I had on my face as read the two page section from the book "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff at Work".... The idea of someone telling me to lower my expectations just seems obsurd.

When I continued to read I realized how much sense it made. Why would we assume that in life everyone we meet, date, work or interact with will give us 100% of what we expect 100% of the time? Now don't get me wrong, i'm not saying to go around expecting the worse from everyone, rather to accept that fact that you will meet people who aren't what or who you expect them to be. Be it the non communicating boy friend/girl friend, the "do the bare minimum" co-worker, or better yet the customer service rep who hates everything about customer service. We will meet them all, over and over again through out the course of our lifetime and yet we don't adjust our thinking to account for it.

We're all human and the sooner we realize that the bumps in the road are simply a part of the commute. The faster make the adjustment for these bumps, more enjoyable the ride will be. LEAVE A COMMENT AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK?

INSIDE SCOOP ON NEW MUSIC FROM JUANITA PLACE

Juanita Place: Her Hero

1. Intro

2. Brand New (Music by B. Rice and S. Jones, Lyrics by B. Rice for Making My Music Publishing, BMI) …“This song was originally a concept taken from one of our favorite instrumentals to play. Shontez and I were rehearsing and came up with a new sound to our old standard. When I began writing lyrics, the dark quality of the sound gave me an image of an anti-hero preparing to save the only thing he really cared about…”

3. Hello Venus (Music and Lyrics by B. Rice for Kognate Music Publishing, BMI) “…this is a song that I feel is an accomplishment in my growth as a lyricist. It captures the moment that I have felt inspired by music and women who perform it, and the surreal imagery you see in the sounds. Also, it’s really a song that came to me after I realized I had a huge crush on one of the most unlikely female artists, and she totally doesn’t pay me any attention…”

4. Coming To an End (Music by B. Rice and S. Jones, Lyrics by B. Rice for Making My Music Publishing, BMI) …“I started this song by myself from a random melodic progression that just wouldn’t leave my head, which is how it normally starts. After I brought this song to the group, ‘cause I couldn’t finish it, it took on an entirely different feel. Shontez was practicing a lot of Latin rhythms that week, and couldn’t wait to get it in a song. This groove is crazy when we play it live.”

5. Just To Us ¤ (Music and Lyrics by B. Rice for Kognate Music Publishing, BMI) “…this is 100% true, I wrote this song after being caught in a very elaborate lie, which ended up getting me so stressed that I couldn’t eat, which is an amazing feat, cause I can ALWAYS eat, but this day tore me up. The result, I had to write in hopes that someone would hear, ‘cause the girl I had just pissed off, wasn’t having it…”

6. Percussive (Drums by S. Jones)

On The B.Free Blog, A Discussion of Race: "Black Women...Invisible?"

That is what one study suggests. I was recently sent an article by a friend published on Psychology Today about black women being invisible. Hmmm, I know you're thinking, exactly what do they mean? The study noted in the article suggests that black women are often overlooked physically in public and their comments often go unheard or brushed off in social settings. There were two parts to the study. One part was a facial recognition of sorts and the other was a recall of comments made during a discussion.

I go any further, I want to say that I reached my own conclusion before I even finished reading the article. The very last class I took before graduating with my BA in Psychology was a class, more like a seminar on African-Americans. I remember the professor mentioning at the beginning of the course how women in general, but especially black women are often left out of or not used in research studies. One would argue, it is because how research is. I work in research. People feel that there may be some motives that aren't clear, but no research is clear nor would it be dependent if everything was known up front of what would be studied. It creates this bias which could have a serious effect on results. The other reason for not enough blacks in studies in general, is because a lot of research studies that involve studying the black population simply do not get funded. My professor wanted to do a study about stress and it's effects on the heart of black people. Our stressors are different. Our heart rates escalate when we walk into a mall for fear of being watched or followed because we may steal or when we are in class or work and we are the only Sistas Representin' (SRs) in the room. So, no wonder we may get overlooked in social studies because no other race besides our own wants to acknowledge us!

The Grimm Report CD reviews: June 5th - Herstory

June Fifth
Herstory
Grimm Score: 3.5 out of 5

There's a lot of speculation on why a rap group would choose a name like “June 5th”. It’s pretty simple, really. It’s the anniversary date that these three beautiful young ladies came together. Tiffany Foxx, Brooke Holladay and Scar Ladon are the three main ingredients that make up the female group June Fifth. The trio, hailing from St. Louis, hits the mixtape scene hard with their latest 28 track project titled “Herstory”... Read More

WHY ARE YOU SO THIRSTY? by Tasha Burton

Leaving out "are" because you HAVE to ask it that way.

Seriously though. The seasons change and for some odd reason, the thirst some people are displaying are beyond desperate. It is.

It's time to stop that and appreciate yourself. There are some people where the only thing they want is a significant other. That is what they pray about at night. While I, in my own opinion, feel like that is one of the things you just fall back and let God handle without praying about......I digress. To each his own.

The one thing that seems different is that I have a lot more "internet" friends now. So, I see a lot more status updates and things that people say than usual. A lot of women are talking about how much they need or could go for some sex or how they are lusting after some guy they know or how badly they want to be with him. It's the internet, people are going to say and do whatever they want. Let me just say, there is a line between speaking about it every now and then and then speaking about it all day, every day. Guys too. Guys constantly displaying elementary school behavior; treating women like they have the cooties. Guys making women upset just to get noticed or get some attention. Fellas, cut that shit out. It's not cute or attractive and it makes you look like an asshole, regardless if you're doing this for our "social networking entertainment." No one is paying you to put on a show so just be yourself.

2010′s Most Scent-sational Holiday Gifts

Get all the latest on the beauty buzz tip click here

Beautiful packaging. A recognizable luxury label. A gift that's highly personal. Something she'll use again and again. Fragrance is all of these, which makes it a great holiday gift idea. But choose carefully; While giving perfume or cologne as a present can be a very thoughtful, scent preference is very specific to each individual. A scent that is absolutely divine to one can be horribly offensive to another.

So to avoid a holiday hissy fit, scope out your recipient's perfume stash or inquire casually about what types of scents she likes before you go to the fragrance counter or beauty megastore. Take the time to do some investigating, then follow your nose to a great gift!

----->

If she wears Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, she'll like: Dior Addict 2

Over over 200 fragrances are launched annually, but gems like Light Blue are enduring. And for good reason: Light Blue is a stunning fragrance that is a delight to both the woman who wears it and those around her. Want to gift her something familiar but with a fresh twist? Dior Addict 2 is similar to Light Blue in that it's a floral feminine scent with citrus, musk and wood notes; Light Blue's wood note being cedarwood and Addict 2's being sandalwood. Both are contagiously upbeat, joyful scents that are perfect for the vibrant woman who loves life. If Light Blue is a serene happiness, Addict 2 is slightly more free-spirited, bubbly, effervescent.

The Grimm Report CD reviews: Ali - So St. Louis

Ali
So St. Louis
Grimm Score: 3 out of 5

Ali has been a pillar to his group the St. Lunatics and to the city of St. Louis since 1993. From releasing his own album “Heavy Starch” in 2002, to dropping a collaboration album with Big Gipp in 2007, to being featured on almost every Lunatics album in existence, the president of Derrty Entertainment is too bold and determined for anyone to deny. Ali’s new mixtape, “So St. Louis” looks to invigorate the streets of his hometown for the summertime. Be that as it may, the languid and slow flow rapper relapses with a depthless release that sounds somewhat similar to his first album... Read More

BFree Review: The Urban League YP General Body Meeting

Yesterday, November 10th ya boy Bfree Paparazzi went to check out what's going on with the Urban League Young Professionals. The meeting took place at Urban League Headquarters, 3701 Grandel Square at 6pm.

.

I was pretty informative and a very network friendly. I arrived a little after 6pm and was ushered into a board room and given the break down of the organization, its history, purpose, and key points. New Memember orientation last about 8mins and it was off to do a little networking. They provided some pizza and juice/soda (sooooo bad but soooo good). After the meet & greet chit chat was done they started w/ a message from the president (Ms Kira Van Niel), followed up with info on what the Urban League was doing on national front.

.

We were then introduced to various speakers, recieved information from/about the Black Repertory Theater, learned a little bit about saving some money from the guest speakers from US Banks and to close they offered up a panel discussion w/ the "Young Leaders Panel". This panel consisted of Alderman Antonio French (21st Ward, cool brother), Alderwoman Kacie Starr Triplett (6th ward, super passion sister), and Patrick Brown Policy assistant for the City of St. Louis under Mayor Francis Slay (very insightful brother)..

.

This meeting was a virtual who's who of young executives... Boeing, A.B., Unitedway, Wells Fargo, Edwards Jones, At&t, and the list goes on. If you're interested in giving back, networking, personal growth, professional development, or just chilling and want to know what the "Go Getters" are up to... you should definitely check it out!!

MOVIE REVIEW: UNSTOPPABLE... DENZEL DOES IT AGAIN!

Unforgettable would be another good name for this movie. Denzel did it again. Not since “Man on Fire” has Denzel delivered such a heart pounding, edge of your seat performance. This movie could be used as the definition of INTENSE. My jaws and hands were clinched almost the entire movie. The fact that this movie is based on true events makes it that much more riveting. The directing was such that you felt like you were involved with this potential tragedy. The close calls, the bravery, the heart and soul of the workers involved, all was simply amazing! I can’t wait to go see it again. This needs to be seen in a theatre for the full effect. The size of the train and the feel of the rumble and speed are not missed on the big screen.

A must see!

5 Stars *****

DA REVIEW: RESIDENT EVIL AFTERLIFE 3D

Resident Evil: Afterlife reviewed by Miata L. Harris

The 4th installment of Resident Evil is in 3D. Normally im against action movies in 3D, due to prior movies being really bad in 3D (Clash of the Titans, Last Airbender), but PLEASE DO see this in 3D!

I dont want to give away too much of the plot but I'll say this...
This movie pleased me and the audience with the hallowed trinity: girls, gore and guns.
Who doesn't like those?!
The action was awesome- A kind of Matrix Of The Dead, Afterlife mixes mild horror with kung-fu action.
The best set-piece features the figure of the ‘Axeman’ from the games. A behemoth of pain and malice, the dude just appears from nowhere to attack! Blood, people and bullets fly towards you in 3D and the action is neverending.

3.8 out of 5 stars

Thats all for now! stay tuned for the next review!

P.S. - Yes ladies, Boris Kodjoe is in this installment, Sexy as ever! (I just went to see him! LMAO)

ST. LOUIS SHAME ON YOU --> Must read!!

by Kevin Jordan,

Let's get to it, all week Facebook, e-mails, the TV news, newspapers, city town hall meetings, and just general conversation have highlighted the hot button topic of clubs in Downtown St.Louis, that are in jeapordy of losing their liquor licencse's, or having to close all together, because they cater to black patrons, or allow black(hip-hop nights). Now, don't get offended but let me say this to all of my brothers and sisters running around town with signs screaming racism......... Shut the F up!!!! I read an untrue, but yet pointed article that kinda sums up what's going on, it talks about how the KKK had a meeting to disband because black folks are their own worst enemies, and they could never do to us, what we do to each other!!!

DAMN.............................. Does racism exist, of course, and particularly true in the St.Louis and the state of Missouri. Can we fix it, work on it, address it, and make race relations here better? Hell no!! Why might you ask, because we are to busy being our own worst enemy, so how then can you address problems associated with race, when you can't solve problems within your race!!??!! Now this isn't just an St.Louis problem, this problem is occuring all over the United States, so I laugh when I hear St.Louisian's say, "I'm moving to such and such city because of the violence", without doing anything to address the problem here, like it won't follow you, or be there waiting when you get to the next city!! Example....In 2010, a year that we are barely half way through 15,000 people have been murdered in California, 20 people were shot and killed in Chicago over a 3-day weekend, 10 people were shot in Indianapolis on a night during the Indiana Black Expo. These are just a few examples, but there are plenty more out there, just check your news sources, we live in the information age. So yes things are happening around the country, but to address it I have to start with the people in MY CITY-ST.LOUIS, MO!!

Now over the stretch of 2010, I have sent out Weekend Roundups that have begged of us as a people, to behave as grown, adult, classy, proud men and women when we step out in public, as well as being an example to our children. But today, in light of some of the things going on with the social scene downtown, st.charles, N.County, etc. and the responses to what's going, I realize that I can do no more than say SHAME ON YOU!!! I have included myself, but what we need to do is take stock in the part that we have played in the plight of our people, change it, and then I'll sit and listen to what folks have to say about race. If you think I'm just ranting, read the next paragraph, identify yourself, and then make a conscience effort to make a change!! F.Y.I. Many of us will identify with more than one of these persons, just remember to make a change and try not to be this person(s). Oh, and by all means forward this Weekend Roundup to anyone you feel needs to read it, no matter where they are. Shame on you for allowing your children to be your best friend instead of your child! Shame on for allowing that no good, uninspired, do nothing, abusive, bum ass, oxyen stealing, down low, trifling, uneducated, hater of life between your thighs! Shame on you for laying down between the thighs of that sneaky, do nothing ass, lazy anti-progressive, (sex for jewelry, money, cars, lottery ticket, clothes, bubble gum, status, or toothpaste), penius hopping, uninspired, uneducated carrier of future misery!! Shame on you, if you produce a baby with either of the two previous mentioned Soy's(Shame on You's)! Shame on you if you plan on having a child with either of the two previous mentioned Soy's! Shame on you if you can't drink and think, but you still drink! Shame on you if you walk around your young kids in the buff, bra's, panties, underwear, or shirtless! Shame on you if kissing on different men and women around your young children, or being sexual with another adult around your children!!! Shame on you if you party with some no good MOFO's, and bring them to classy establishments so they can fuck up everybody's else's night! Shame on you for letting your kids see you do all the things you tell them not to do (drink, smoke, drugs, sex, cursing, ect.)!! Shame on you for letting anything in your club, bar, or establishment, just to make and extra buck, when you know that it's a threat to the environment, and well-being, and safety of your establishment!!!! Shame on you for allowing your kids to watch B.E.T., videos, Myspace, Facebook, Internet surfing, or play video games all damn day, everyday, instead of doing their homework, and getting involved in some school project(sports, theatre, band, dance, book club, whatever!!), or outside activities that increase their mind food!!! Shame on you for sitting outside the club, that you didn't have the deciency to put clothes on for, or spend money in, and screwing everybody who did, causing them to have a terrible night, instead of an enjoyable one!! Shame on you for playing the race card, when race didn't have anything to do with why your club is on the list for a revoked liquor licencse, or closure outside of the fact that it involved some black on black crime!! Shame on you for not finding a more worthwhile cause to fight, while soaking up all this news time on tv, the internet, the newspaper, and the Weekend Roundup!!! Shame on you, for not marching when they shut down the Bi-State bus lines, shut down and boarded public schools, ect., all while you down there marching for some clubs!!! Shame on you, me, and everyone in the community that has not stepped up to do somthing to make our community better without shifting blame!!! Shame on you if you don't have something to be ashamed about!!! I don't have to tell you, I can go on forever with this tirade, hell you can add your on "Shame on you" to the list. My point with this, was to show that there are way more things going on in our communities, that collectively projects a bad image of us on a whole. Play your part, fix what you can, and then lets come together and we can talk about the race card, but until then put it in your pipe and smoke it!!! Enjoy your weekend, and try to make it safe, enjoyable, and fun!!
